Residents warned of email phishing attempts using City’s name

The City has been informed of fake emails that have been circulating, soliciting funds from members of the public, and purporting to be from the municipality. The latest one includes a reference to the Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato. 

The phishing email includes a number of fabrications with an ultimate request where an urgent ewallet/Electronic Funds Transfer to a relative is requested. This is a scam.

In previous weeks, we’ve also seen ponzy schemes developing on social media using the City of Cape Town’s name.  The City warns residents to be vigilant and not to respond to such emails or social media adverts.

Any suspicious emails must be reported to the South African Police Service.
